Le Rétro — Casse-croûte is a compact fast food spot tucked near a convenience store in Gatineau’s Plateau neighborhood, known for its nostalgic diner vibe. The interior leans into that retro charm, giving off a cozy but somewhat tight feel, where seating fills up quickly especially during casual family outings or local celebrations.

This place shines if you’re after generous, straightforward comfort food without the fuss—think classic Québécois staples done well. Their poutine portions are notably large and loaded with cheese and gravy, making it a solid pick for a hearty snack or casual meal. The burgers, especially the “Rétro Burger,” come juicy and flavorful, pairing well with fries that stand out thanks to a crisp, likely double-fried texture reminiscent of traditional casse-croûtes. Milkshakes, particularly the chocolate, add a thick, indulgent finish.

Visitors tend to appreciate Le Rétro for quick but satisfying eats, with enough quantity to share or save leftovers. The small scale and straightforward service create a friendly local diner atmosphere, where staff interactions feel personal and easygoing—reminiscent of a neighborhood spot where the cook’s warmth adds as much flavor as the food.

It’s a place geared toward anyone looking for comfort food in casual settings—families celebrating birthdays, friends grabbing a quick bite, or anyone craving a straightforward meal without pretension. While the dining space can feel cramped and cleanliness might occasionally slip, those seeking hearty poutines, classic burgers, or a thick milkshake in the Plateau area will find plenty to appreciate here.

The best time to visit is likely off-peak hours or when you’re stopping by to pick up a quick bite, as seating is limited but turnover fairly quick. Those who enjoy chatting with friendly staff and a retro diner backdrop will find Le Rétro a dependable local option for comfort food classics.

The service is amazing at this diner! Food is simple and tasty, fries are particularly tastyyy! We also had a poutine, very generous portion of cheese and gravy. Pizza is good they also sell slices. Definitely a favorite in the plateau area! Must try!

The atmosphere is very retro, as the name implies. The place is a bit small, but there was still seating available le when we were there for my daughter's birthday. And for this, they also have a special offer of free and tasty donuts for the celebrated. The retro burger was delicious and so we're the fries! Service was great!

Very huge portion, paid about 17$ for large poutine and a drink. Totally worth it. The cook was such a sweet man :)

Small diner adjacent to the convenience store, it's more like a fast food place similar to Five Guys. The fries were excellent, they're "casse-croute" style, probably double-fried. Had the retro burger and it was tasty and juicy. The two of us shared a medium fries, the portion was more than enough for two (they also have large and family sizes). Shared a large chocolate shake, which is rather expensive at around $10, but very good. The fried zucchinis were also excellent, we were less impressed by the fried pickles. Just a matter of personal taste.

Food was pretty good. The place could have been cleaner. The only table that was available was dirty.

We quite enjoyed our meals of a Le Retro burger and a smash burger with sides of poutine and onion rings. All was delicious, and properly cooked. Service was great too. Not cheap but you DO get what you pay for! Ambiance too, FUN.
